Parking strife in Horsforth

Students at a Horsforth college have launched a petition to secure more parking spaces after being forced to park on residential streets. Click here for full story.

There are more than 2,500 students at Trinity and All Saints College in Brownberrie Lane - but only around 417 spaces for students, staff and visitors.

Since September parking spaces have been reduced following a revamp of the car parks and parking meters have been installed. As a result queues of cars have built up trying to find a parking space, causing students to be late for lectures.

People have had to park in the nearby streets and some students have even had notes left on their windscreens from residents saying they are creating an obstruction.

Students used to be able to park at the nearby Yarnbury Rugby Club, but this has now been restricted to members only parking.

Primary education student Sarah Gaughan, 25, said: "I am happy to pay the car parking fees, but only if there was a space for me to pay for.

"I have been late for classes on several occasions because there have been no spaces left."

Another primary education student, Stacey Fleming, 25, said: "I can understand how the residents feel because I would feel exactly the same.

"Street parking is not through selfishness, it is so I can get to lectures on time when the car park is full. I live away so I need to bring my car every day and I am happy to pay for parking."

One angry resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "I think this is a disgrace as there is nowhere for us to park outside our own houses. There are schools nearby so the traffic is busy enough without having extra parking on the streets."

A spokesman for Yarnbury Rugby Club said: "Yarnbury had an agreement with the college for three years but after two years and numerous complaints to the college from our members due to inconsiderate parking Yarnbury cancelled the agreement.

"We tried to contact the college and get them to police the parking on our land for their students and staff, which they were obliged to do under the agreement, but they refused."

A spokeswoman for Horsforth's Trinity & All Sainst College, said: "Over 70 per cent of the college students live on a direct bus route in the Leeds area and we are encouraging students and staff to take up this option through discounted bus fares, improved cycle storage facilities, upgraded lighting on pedestrian routes, and links with a car share initiative.

"Clearly if we succeed in increasing primarily the usage of public transport especially by students this will result in an increased availability of campus car parking and reduced impact on off-campus car parking and obviously result in reducing the carbon footprint of the college and its users."
