Pair fined after tonnes of rubbish dumped at Leeds beauty spot

A landlord and his builder have been fined for allowing waste to be fly tipped at a Leeds beauty spot.

Tonnes of rubbish, including beds and sofas, appeared overnight in Temple Newsam’s parkland on March 19.

Council enforcement officers found paperwork relating to a property on Armley Ridge Road amongst the junk.

The property’s landlord – David Scott of William Foster Way, Burley-in-Wharfedale, and his builder James Cassidy, of Earlswood Avenue, Roundhay – admitted the waste dumped at the park had come from their development.

Cassidy claimed he paid someone to take the rubbish and said he believed they were authorised to dispose of waste.

Both men admitted offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Magistrates at Leeds fined Cassidy, 57, £1,000 and ordered him to pay £1,338.50 costs, while landlord Scott, 41, was fined £500 plus £1,338 costs.
