A cruel thug repeatedly stabbed his pet dog Scooby while his partner dug a shallow grave for the stricken animal.
Richard Haw was drunk when he plunged a knife in to his Staffordshire Bull Terrier four times, magistrates at Wakefield heard.
Haw’s partner Michelle Krivenes, 42, had dug a grave in the garden of their home in Moorhouse Crescent, Darnley.
Police found a trail of blood leading from the kitchen and into the garden where officers rescued Scooby and took him to a vets for treatment during last month’s incident.
As well as stab wounds, Scooby was dehydrated an emaciated and, tragically, had to be put to sleep.
Prosecutor Alex Johnson told the court “The dog was shaking and visibly in pain from his injuries.”
Haw, 46, admitted to inflicting four stab wounds to Scooby. Both Haw and Krivenes admitted causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
Mitigating Gregg Cross said the couple saw Scooby was ill and wanted to put him out of his misery, adding: “They accept they made a terrible decision in the way they went about it.”
District Judge Marie Mallon jailed Haw and Krivenes for 12 weeks, but suspended the sentence for 12 months.
The couple must each complete 200 hours of unpaid work and were ordered to pay £50 costs each.
They were banned from keeping animals for life.
