Only here for the beer... and best Yorkshire grub

By Tony Gardner YORKSHIRE'S finest beers and quality produce took centre stage at the Great Yorkshire Showground this weekend.

Ales, lagers, milds, stouts and porters proved the perfect partners for award-winning pork pies cakes, hand-crafted breads, organic pork and chocolate wedding cakes at the inaugural Great Northern Beer and Fine Food Weekend.

Thousands of visitors poured into the event in Harrogate throughout Saturday and Sunday to sample the best national, regional and local brewers had to offer.

Quality foods including ice-cream, preserves and Yorkshire-reared meats, such as venison were on show along with expert advice of which dishes best compliment which beers.

The exhibition included a celebrity theatre where drinks expert Oz Clarke and "Beer Chef" Richard Fox shared their thoughts on beer tasting.

Anthony Worrall Thompson and Yorkshire's James Martin wowed the audience with the best dishes to compliment the national drink.

Mr Worrall Thompson told the YEP: "For years beer has been losing the battle to wine when it comes to complimenting food.

"But more are more people are now turning to beer as they realise beer can be the perfect drink with hundreds of dishes.

"Yorkshire is the perfect place to market this and showcase such an event. Leeds is probably the most vibrant city outside London with some brilliant chefs and restaurants springing up all over the place."

Exhibitors also came from Cumbria, Northumberland, Suffolk and Kent. Their offerings ranged from parsnip-flavoured crisps to authentic African snacks.

The event's marketing director, Vincent McLaughlin, said: "This is about making the most of some of our finest produce.

"We have traditionally associated wine with fine dining but this event will show why our own national drink is just as capable of accompanying an excellent menu.

"There are as many different flavours within beers as there are in wine and this is a marvellous opportunity to sample them."
