Olympics chief visits successful Yorks bidders
YORKSHIRE firms benefiting from London 2012 were visited by John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority.
He called on Lytag Ltd of The Menagerie, Escrick, near York, and Marshalls of Birkby, Huddersfield.
Lytag is the main contractor for the aquatics centre and Marshalls has supplied paving, drainage and street furniture to the athletes' village, the Olympic stadium, Olympic park and concourse.
Both secured their contracts through CompeteFor, the online "business dating" website, designed to give small and medium sized (SME) the chance to get work.
So far more than 100,000 UK firms have registered to take advantage of the 5,000 opportunities.
About 74 per cent of the contracts have gone to SMEs and 18 per cent have been won by firms with 10 staff or fewer.
John Armitt said: "Businesses from Yorkshire have made the most of the golden opportunities that are available."
A spokesman for development agency Yorkshire Forward said many companies in the region had secured contracts and there was still time for others to bid.
Mr Armitt's visits followed a conference at Leeds Town Hall where businesses were given advice about bidding for London 2012 projects.
