Today sees the launch of the Oliver Awards 2013, the fifth celebration of the local dining scene staged annually by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Restaurants, cafe-bars, gastro pubs and sandwich shops are all invited to throw their hats into the ring and be in with a chance of taking home one of 17 awards.

A nominations supplement containing the names of everyone who enters will be published at the end of next month. Then a shortlist supplement will be released in January and the winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony in Leeds in March.

Last year the big winners were Kendells Bistro in Leeds who took home a trio of awards: Best chef, Best fine dining and the gong for Overall winner.

Yorkshire Evening Post deputy editor Brian Nuttney said: “The Oliver Awards are a chance for those at the forefront of the dining scene to come together and celebrate their achievements, which are made all the more remarkable given the current challenging financial climate.

“I’d urge anyone who thinks their business is worthy of an award to enter as soon as possible.”

The categories are: Best fine dining, Best lunch, Best world, Best Italian, Best Indian, Best cafe/bar, Best fast food, Best newcomer, Best hotel restaurant, Best city centre restaurant, Best suburban restaurant, Best chef, Best service, Best European, Best of British, Overall Winner and the Outstanding contribution award.

The Oliver judges will refer to the back catalogue of Oliver and Little Oliver reviews which feature in the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Scene supplement every Thursday.

Nominations are made online and must be submitted by midnight on Friday November 23.

The full nominations list will appear in a supplement the following Thursday.
