Leeds schools have scored well in the latest series of inspections by education regulator Ofsted.

The watchdog carried out 23 inspections in the city from September to December 2009, with more than half achieving the higher ratings.

In the Wakefield area overall, where Ofsted carried out 13 inspections, just three schools were rated good or outstanding, seven satisfactory and three inadequate.

Across Kirklees, Ofsted carried out 16 inspections in the same four-month period.

Nine schools were rated good or outstanding, seven satisfactory and none achieved bottom marks.

The latest inspections were based on new-style national checks which have been criticised by some educational experts.

Under the new regime, the proportion of schools classed as "inadequate" has almost doubled since the changes came in last September.

It also means good and outstanding schools are now inspected less frequently.
