TWO police officers were injured after a suspected drink driver allegedly twice rammed their patrol car during a chase in the early hours of New Year’s Day

The incident happened after officers spotted a Citroen Berlingo van being driven erratically on Pontefract Road at Hemsworth near Pontefract just before 1.30am.

Police say the driver stopped after officers signalled for him to pull over, but is alleged to have deliberately reversed into the police car causing damage.

The van then made off from the officers at speed and again rammed the police car during the pursuit.

The driver abandoned the vehicle on Pontefract Road.

He was arrested soon afterwards after the two injured officers gave chase on foot.

The suspect, a 20-year old man, was questioned on suspicion of drink driving and failing to stop for police.

He was later bailed pending further enquiries.

Det Insp Mark Catney of Wakefield CID, said: “This was obviously a serious incident but fortunately, the two officers involved received only minor injuries.”

Witnesses are asked to call Wakefield CID via 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
