Nostalgia: Street views of Edwardian Leeds
WINTRY: The Corn Exchange, from Duncan Street, a dusting of snow on the ground and a man in a flat cap turned away from the camera.
Last week Times Past looked at some rarely seen images of the streets of Leeds, unearthed from our archives.
They depicted streets many will have found familiar and yet many had buildings which no longer exist and they showed a city devoid of traffic and even busy thoroughfares devoid of people, something which would be unimaginable today.
But Leeds was a lively city and this week’s selection of pictures show the true hustle and bustle which gripped the urban streets around the turn of the century.
There are several images of Briggate but none more interesting than the 1908 picture of the royal visit to Leeds, which shows the street bedecked with bunting. A policeman stands in the foreground and the Queen’s Arcade clock can be seen on the right.
Unlike today, it was commonplace for vehicles to travel up and down the street and tramlines can be seen running down the middle of the road.
The royal visit in question was King Edward and Queen Alexandra, who came to the city to officially open the new buildings at the University of Leeds.
The King and Queen arrived by train and travelled in an open carriage to the Town Hall, where they were presented to the Mayor (Wilfred Hepton) and Mayoress.
They then went to Victoria Hall and were given lunch in the Mayor’s rooms before travelling to the university for the opening.
Other images of Briggate show it as a busy shopping mall, full of people – it was a time when the horse and cart was a common sight.
