North Leeds: Supermarket plan for Chapel Allerton
BIG PLANS: The site on Harrogate Road, Chapel Allerton, where Morrisons plans to build a store.
A LANDMARK site at the heart of a Leeds suburb could soon become a supermarket.
If plans get the go-ahead, more than 100 news jobs will be created as well as additional construction opportunities, say developers.
Morrisons Supermarket wants to open the 10,000 sq feet store on the vacant former Allerton House site, on Harrogate Road, in the heart of Chapel Allerton.
But one campaigner, who has lived in the area for six decades, says “the village” does not necessarily need any more food stores.
Margaret Jackson is the former chair of the Chapel Allerton Residents’ Association and has lived in Chapel Allerton for 60 years.
She said: “What do we need any more supermarkets for? The village is fine as it is with its individual shops and I really don’t think we need another larger store.”
She added she was happy with services already on offer in the community.
Somerfield already operates a main supermarket in the leafy suburb and a Tesco Express is open at Harrogate Road, as part of a nearby petrol station. Lidl is also nearby, further down Harrogate Road.
Members of the public are invited to discuss the proposal and give their views at an exhibition, before the retailer applies for planning permission.
Andrew Cooper, development executive for Morrisons, said: “As well as boosting the local economy, the new store would create in the region of 100 new full-time and part-time local job opportunities with additional construction employment jobs during the building phase.
“We want people to come along and have their say. It is our plan to provide a foodstore that is appropriate in scale and design for this site. It will help to keep people shopping in Chapel Allerton, stimulating the local economy.”
A public exhibition goes on display on Thursday, January 19, from 12.30-8pm, and Friday, January 20, from 10am-3pm, at the Methodist Church, Town Street, Chapel Allerton.

Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 03:44 AMits been a long time since I walked the streets of the village now a so called suburb,Police station, blacksmiths in town street,Mary's fish n chips. co-op ,in regent street and a dairy, all of these have gone with the past. The place does need a goog clean up looking at the photograph on the site in Harrogate road, but surly not another supermarket.I will be over in May 2012 to have a look. Cheers , John Cole Western Australia.

Friday, January 20, 2012 at 09:27 AM@GRIPPER.... 1920s 1930s judging by old photos on Leodis.org!! ;) the CARA chairman was available but this story wouldn't have had the same NIMBYist vibe. there are photos of the proposal on flickr, search for Morrisons CA proposal and you'll see the 4-page leaflet they've produced.

Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 03:37 PMWell done Morrisons! This will save Morrisons shoppers a journey into Leeds city centre or to Harehills and will provide healthy competition. Hopefully it will be more than a mini-express store like the Tesco outlet further down the road and will provide quality fresh meat, bread etc. Also, the creation of new jobs in this current economic climate is fantastic news and should be applauded. By the way, how many decades do we have to go back to when Chapel Allerton was a village? Also, why is this article reporting the views of the former chair or the Residents Association, was the current Chairman unavailable for comment, or does the view of the Residents Association differ to that of Margaret Jackson?

Monday, January 16, 2012 at 11:20 PMwhos the village idiot, I know one or two. But, back to the reality, its not a village as some of the pretentious idealists would like to pretend it to be, its a suburb, but, to say it requires another supermarket is ridiculous, these mini xpresses are spreading faster than the plague, and, where ever they do, it announces the death of more local businesses, keep these greedy giants out of the leafy suburbs, give the local businesses some chance of suvival
