AN INSPIRING Leeds entrepreneur has been nominated for an award for her outstanding achievements in education.

Jo Adamson-Parker, founder of Northern Drama Acting School based in Leeds, has been nominated for the YEP-backed Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards, which helps raise money for Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley.

The Leeds-based casting director is in the education category for her work nurturing local acting talent.

Jo has helped hundreds of local children through a range of theatre projects and set up the school four years ago.

Starting with just 20 students, the school now supports over 100 students, aged from 18 to 60.

Jo will also be launching the Northern Drama Acting School Academy next month, which will cater for 14 to 17-year-olds.

Jo said: “I really enjoy working with my students – they are an amazing bunch of people who are talented but very generous of their time with each other.

“Being nominated for an award for doing something I love is great and reflects on them.”

She added: “I started Northern Drama Acting School because being a casting director, I recognised the amazing talent in Leeds which was going unnoticed and actors often felt very isolated.

“I wanted create a safe environment for them to explore their craft and be encouraged and to give them somewhere to meet other actors.

“If I can take someone from never setting foot on a stage to shooting a feature film – I’ll do it. I love their success.”

The YEP-backed Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards is now in its 28th year.

The awards ceremony, which will be held at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on Friday, May 9, raises thousands of pounds for Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice and recognises the achievements of inspiring local women.

Nominations are now open for five categories – Yorkshire Woman of Achievement in Business, Education, Sport, Young Achiever of the Year and the Jane Tomlinson Award for Courage.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, April 28.
