More than £1million is being invested in a 229-year-old Leeds business to keep it stitched into the fabric of the city.

Hainsworth, based in Spring Valley Mills, Pudsey, has created new design, performance and protection divisions and has welcomed the eighth generation of the Hainsworth family into the business.

The investment has seen around £400,000 pumped into improving machinery at the mill, improvements made to the office space, IT upgraded and new jobs created.

Tom Hainsworth, the firm’s managing director, said: “The new look Hainsworth is the culmination of more than a year’s planning and implementation and creates a business which we believe is well placed to make the most of our opportunities in the UK and globally.

“Each of the new divisions is led by a dedicated business manager supported by specialist teams of sales, marketing and customer service professionals.”

Several new appointments have been made as part of the changes, with Colin Whittaker recruited as business manager for performance and protection and Michael Booth joining as business manager for design.

Adam Hainsworth is the firm’s new finance director, Rachel Hainsworth is quality director and Rachel’s son, Robert Taylor, has joined the company for a year-long induction.

Tom Hainsworth added: “We are a diverse business with our long-standing work in protective wear for the emergency services, uniforms for the military, snooker and pool cloth for the leisure sector complemented by the launch last year of our first consumer lifestyle brand Scarlet & Argent and increasing demand for our fabrics within the fashion industry.”

He said Hainsworth is also breaking into export markets including China, Australasia, Europe and the United States.

The company is best known for manufacturing the Hainsworth Guard Scarlet cloth worn by the Queen’s Guards outside Buckingham Palace.
