You don’t have to be suited and booted to take the plunge on the latest addition to this year’s Ice Cube.

But some of the men behind the arrival of the new six-metre-high Capital FM Snow Slide and Glacier Run Experience simulator ride couldn’t help but have a go before Ice Cube opens to the public on Friday, January 27.

The two new attractions feature alongside the annual ice rink, in Millennium Square, Leeds, which includes more than 500 square metres of real ice this year.

The Leeds City Council-managed Ice Cube, which is backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post and 105 Capital FM, is now in its 12th year.

Coun Adam Ogilvie, the council’s executive member for leisure, said: “It’s great fun, I hope everybody comes out and gives it a whirl.

“Everything we’re doing this year is related in some way to the Olympic theme so getting people outside and involved in physical activity is really important.”

The 30-metre-long dry slope tubing run, trialled yesterday by Coun Ogilvie and YEP editor Paul Napier, along with the rink and simulator sit next to the new-look Italian Alps-inspired Dolomites Café, which are all open until February 26.

Mr Napier said: “This is a great addition to the ice rink in the centre of Leeds. The Ice Cube is a popular attraction every year it’s been in Leeds and it’s fantastic to see yet more attractions come to our city.”

The rink is open to everyone – although under 12s must be accompanied by an adult – with prices ranging up to £7 for a one hour session.

JoJo, 105 Capital FM breakfast show presenter, said: “I, for one, am very excited about getting my skates on, and I can’t wait to chuck the boys down the slide.”

Limited spaces are also available on skating tuition courses, where sessions are spread over a month.

To book lessons, costing £48 per person, call 0113 2243801.

For information and to book places for the ice rink and snow slide visit www.leeds.gov.uk/icecube, call 0843 2081851 or go to the on-site box office, which opens tomorrow.

Rides on the simulator can be purchased at the ride itself.
