New supermarket plan for Leeds suburb

A supermarket has re-submitted a new planning application for the heart of a Leeds suburb.

Morrisons is hoping to build a new store on wasteland in Chapel Allerton, creating around 100 new jobs.

The supermarket giant previously held an open day informing residents of their proposals. A public meeting followed attended by 100 people.

Some people living nearby were fearful of the traffic impact on the community and nearby residential homes.

Several people objected over the expected increase in vehicles from shoppers.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “We have submitted a new application and have worked closely with Leeds City Council on this. We hope to build a fantastic superstore that will be a major asset to the people and community of Chapel Allerton.

“We have addressed previous concerns about traffic issues. We feel Morrisons will fit in really well with the community.”

Morrisons Supermarket wants to open the 10,000 sq feet store on the vacant former Allerton House site, on Harrogate Road, in the heart of Chapel Allerton.

Somerfield already operates a main store in the leafy suburb and a Tesco Express is at Harrogate Road, as part of a nearby petrol station. Lidl is also nearby, further down Harrogate Road and there is a Co-op store.

The plans were originally unveiled at a public meeting last year.

Chapel Allerton resident and former Leeds Labour Euro-MP and Councillor Michael McGowan, who opposed the original plan, said: “The last thing Chapel Allerton needs is another supermarket in a community which has serious parking and traffic problems and is at the heart of a conservation area.

“There is a need for affordable housing for young people, improved doctors’ surgery premises, and traffic-free areas for pedestrians.”

Leeds City Council said they had received a re-submitted planning application but officers were still awaiting some outstanding information before it could be classed as valid. It will then be considered.
