Music stars will help Leeds kick off the countdown to Christmas in noteworthy style.

Council bosses today announced details of the city’s annual festive lights switch-on extravaganza.

It will take place in Victoria Gardens on The Headrow on the evening of Thursday, November 8.

And musical entertainment will be supplied by two acts who will be familiar to TV viewers across the land – Loveable Rogues and Tyler James.

Loveable Rogues came fourth in this year’s edition of smash-hit ITV1 show Britain’s Got Talent and currently boast more than 200,000 followers on Twitter.

Tyler James, meanwhile, finished as runner-up in the first series of BBC1 singing competition The Voice UK.

But the musicians will not be the only people taking to the stage at next month’s bash.

More guest celebrities, including a cast of local sporting heroes, are due to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Around 15,000 people are expected to attend the free event, which will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display.

The night is being organised by Leeds City Council and Real Radio with support from the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Coun Adam Ogilvie, the council’s executive member for leisure, said today: “We are delighted to be welcoming Loveable Rogues and Tyler James to Leeds for our lights switch-on.

“They are sure to put on a great performance for the family audience and along with our other guests it will make for a fantastic show to get the Christmas party started in Leeds.”

Famous names who have appeared at previous illuminations switch-on parties in the city include Leeds United footballer-turned-Hollywood hardman Vinnie Jones, Leeds-born radio DJ Chris Moyles and pop princesses Girls Aloud.

For more information on this year’s celebrations, visit the www.leeds.gov.uk/switchon web page or ring 0113 395 0891.

Start time for the event is 6.45pm.

* Leeds’s festive lights are among the largest in the UK, covering 15 miles around the city centre.
