Murder trial told of bullying at Wakefield restaurant

A KITCHEN porter who was stabbed to death in a Wakefield Indian restaurant had been bullied by his alleged attacker, a murder trial heard.

Syed Ghulan Zilani, 48, was stabbed in the stomach by colleague Mohammed Ahmed, 31, while working in the India Palace, Smyth Street, Wakefield.

A jury at Leeds Crown Court heard that the pair, both from Bangladesh but from different areas of that country, had fallen out earlier that evening in a row over the way Mr Zilani had washed a tray.

For the prosecution Chris Batty said: "The deceased complained to his wife during the week of his death that he was being bullied by the defendant, saying the defendant was always angry with him and he was frightened of him."

Mr Zilani was stabbed in the abdomen and died less than two hours later on June 15 last year.

The court heard Ahmed fled the scene in a taxi. Days later he went to Wood Street Police Station in Wakefield. He accepted stabbing Mr Zilani but said it was in self defence.

Ahmed, of Elizabeth Street, Bradford, denies murdering Mr Zilani, of Ramsey Street, Bradford.
