Why not get involved in the YEP-backed Mission Christmas toy appeal before collection points close on Thursday? Spread some festive joy

Young mums facing a struggle to buy Christmas presents for their children this year are being given a festive boost.

The Getaways Girls charity, which is based in Bayswater Grove, Harehills, has asked for gift-wrapped help from the YEP-backed Mission Christmas appeal for some of the 400 women it supports every year.

The appeal, run by 96.3 Radio Aire and Magic 828’s Cash for Kids charity, aims to deliver gifts to children in need on Christmas Day.

Residents and businesses across West Yorkshire still have time to donate new and unwrapped gifts to the appeal before the last collection point closes on Thursday.

Director of the charity Flavia Docherty said: “It’s crucial as some of the young mums we support and some of the children would get very little at Christmas otherwise.

“Just seeing their faces when they open their presents is amazing – it does matter and it does make a big difference.”

Getaway Girls, which celebrated its 25th birthday this week, helps vulnerable 11 to 25-year-old women build confidence through training, volunteering and peer education.

Mission Christmas, which is supported by Crown Point Shopping Park and Foresters, has ensured more than 6,000 children will receive a gift at Christmas so far this year.

The appeal delivered more than 14,000 gifts worth over £500,000 to children across Leeds and West Yorkshire last year – a target it hopes to surpass in 2013.

Lisa Sullivan, charity manager at Cash for Kids, said: “It goes full circle, we are helping not only the young mums but the next generation as well.

“There are children out there that aren’t going to get anything without our help. Just an extra gift can make the difference and make a child smile on Christmas Day.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the appeal can hand in new and unwrapped gifts at any official collection point today before 5pm, or at Radio Aire, off Burley Road, until tomorrow.
