MP has stomach for fight against foie gras

LEEDS MP Colin Burgon is backing a campaign to ban foie gras in this country.

York MP Hugh Bayley has put down an Early Day Motion deploring the cruelty involved in the food product and Mr Burgon is sponsoring it.

"The force-feeding of geese is already outlawed in Poland, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Israel," said Mr Burgon, Labour MP for Elmet. "I am calling on the Government to follow suit.

"I don't think any special occasion warrants the eating of food produced through brutal and heartless methods," he added.

The MP said that grain was forced down the throats of geese and ducks, causing their livers to swell to 10 times their normal size.
