Motorway 'chemical emergency' was chocolate ice cream
Yorkshire firefighters had an emergency "99" call to a tanker lorry leaking a creamy foam at the side of the A1 while the driver slept early today.
But when crews with pumping appliances from Bedale, Ripon, Masham and Harrogate reached the scene expecting a chemical emergency they discovered that the "creamy foam" was in fact chocolate ice cream.
The fire-crews were alerted to the emergency by police at 5.30am who discovered the lorry parked in a lay-by at the side of the southbound carriageway at Quernhow close to Sinderby and Baldersby.
The driver was already out of his cab with police trying to deal with the leak. The fire-fighters blocked off nearby drains, but were unable to stop a quantity of the ice cream from leaking down them.
It is believed that the fire crews supervised by two officers washed away the leakage.
