Motorcycle fatalities drop while rider numbers increase

LATEST figures from the Government's Department for Transport show the number of injuries and fatalities caused by motorcycle accidents dropped in 2009, despite an increase in motorcycle users.

This comes at a time when figures of serious motor cycle accidents across Yorkshire are rising with the most serious in North Yorkshire where last year 15 riders were killed.

The DFT figures show 472 motorcycle fatalities and 5,350 reported serious injuries, which both represent a drop of four per cent from 2008. In addition, 2009 saw a four per cent drop in motorcycle user casualties, to 20,703, despite a two per cent increase in motorcycle traffic.

William Hughes of Devitt Insurance Services said: “These figures are very encouraging and demonstrate that awareness and safety campaigns must work.

“Despite a fall in accidents, there is no escaping the fact that there were still 472 fatalities, so our message to riders is – ride safely.”
