Morley hosts Great British Redhead Festival
Calling all carrot tops – Morley will be the place to be come April 10. That's the day when the town is holding the first ever Great British Redhead Festival.
And organisers are hoping hundreds of flame-haired folk from across the UK and even Europe will descend on the town for a celebration of the ginger side of life.

The idea is the brainchild of proud redhead Richard Simpson, from Morley, who was inspired by a similar event held in The Netherlands.

Hundreds of people have already signed up to support the event via a Facebook internet group.

Richard is hoping it will attract a huge amount of people to the town and has extended an invitation to probably the country's most famous 'ginger' – Chris Evans.

Richard said he already had several celebratory events in the pipeline, including getting hundreds of redheads together for a photograph outside Morley Town Hall.

He also wants to stage a Ginger Hobby Horse Derby – pitting teams from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England and The Rest of the World against each other to see who is the fastest.
Richard said: "I just want it to be a really fun day.
"What I'd love is for the highlight of it to be a photograph of hundreds of redheads outside Morley Town Hall.
"That would be fantastic -– and an amazing opportunity for artists and photographers.
"But I want people to be able to do their own thing. If anyone has any ideas for things they'd like to organise for the day then great, go for it!"
The Great British Redhead Festival has attracted the backing of local councillors and the town centre manager Peter Mudge.
However, Richard does need to attract funding and is hoping local businesses will get on board to either sponsor an event or provide prizes.
He said: "We are doing this on the basis of zero funding, so if any kind person or company would be interested in sponsoring the event, no matter how small the amount or prize, we'd definitely be interested.
"No-one is getting paid for this event so one hundred per cent of sponsorship would go directly into the event."
* Any local traders, organisations – or redheads – who want to help with sponsorship or to organise their own events for the festival can contact Richard by email: at brilliantredhair@yahoo.co.uk
