Morley prepares for 2010 St George's Day celebrations

Morley has begun the countdown to the most patriotic date in its calendar – with a rallying cry worthy of St George himself.

The town's St George's Day celebrations are officially the biggest in England and this year's are expected to be even bigger than before.

Thousands are expected to attend the free two day occasion – the seventh annual event -– on April 17 and 18.

Town councillor Joe Tetley, a member of the Royal Society of St George, said he hoped the whole town would turn out to celebrate.

He said: "It's a brilliant event and we always make sure there is something for all ages, young and old.

"We started organising this year's event as soon as last year's finished. It's a huge amount of work but it's something we're really proud of.

"Morley has, quite rightly, become known as the most patriotic town in England."

The event kicks off on the Saturday with a market in the centre of town. The main streets will be decked with red and white bunting and there will be a host of children's games.

On the Sunday, just before noon, around 1,000 people will march from Morley Town Hall to Morley Rugby Club, Scatcherd Lane, for the main festivities.

Led by 'St George' and his 'dragon', the parade will be made up of army, air and sea cadets, scouts, cubs, brownies and guides, dignitaries and residents and vintage vehicles. At the rugby field there will be re-enactments of battle scenes from the Civil War and, more recently, from D-Day.

Around 100 archers will take part in a Golden Arrow longbow contest and there will be 'living displays' on how people used to live hundreds of years ago.

There will also be exhibitions of steam engines, craft stalls, charity stands, police dog displays, a children's rugby match, falconry, a Punch and Judy show and morris dancing.

Coun Tetley added: "People come from all over to enjoy the event – it really does put Morley on the map. It's great for the whole town because it helps to boost local trade."

The event is organised by the Leeds branch of the Royal Society of St George, Morley Entertainments Committee and Morley Chamber of Trade and Commmerce.
