More trees are urged in Oakwood blueprint for future

Residents who are surveying the area reckon Oakwood could benefit from more tree planting.

A workshop - attended by 27 residents - did further work on the Neighbourhood Design Statement (NDS) which will be a blueprint for the future of Roundhay and Oakwood.

Former councillor Mike Fox, chairman of Roundhay Planning Forum, said: "In some of the new housing areas there is a real shortage of tree planting on the roadside which makes these estates look very bare. 'Soulless'was one comment.

"Sadly, some front gardens are being removed and replaced with shingle and tarmac to accommodate cars. Gardens are now classed as brown field sites which is having a major effect on the character of areas throughout the country. This is a real spur to our work."

Mr Fox said there would be three further workshops over the next three

months.

He hoped the final draft of the NDS could be completed by Septemberwhen it would go out to public consultation.

He said residents had been upset by planning permission given for the redevelopment of Grove House on North Lane.

"I remember this plan when I was on council," he said. "It shows that developers are in for the long haul.

"We certainly do need the NDS to give planning officers ammunition to fire at inappropriate plans for the area."
