More 999 calls on stroke patients
Calls to emergency services about patients having a stroke have increased by 70 per cent since a national campaign was launched.
The FAST campaign highlights the symptoms of a stroke – facial weakness, arm movement difficulties and speech problems mean it is time to call 999.
Following the start of the drive earlier this year, now health bodies are putting new standards on care for stroke patients into practice.
Serious
Chris Welsh, medical director at Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authority, said: "Increasing awareness of the signs of a stroke, along with our new plans could save 600 lives every year.
"A stroke can be likened to a heart attack in the brain, it's that serious, so it is vital that people take speedy action.
"People often don't realise they have had a stroke."
