At 8.30am on Wednesday, June 17, a man stopped a young girl on Belvedere Avenue and tried to engage her in conversation from a car but the girl ran away.
At no time did the man get out of the car and no physical contact took place.
The man is described as white, middle aged with brown hair balding on the top.
He had thin black framed glasses and was wearing a red tie, a pink shirt and pinstripe suit.
The car is described as a large black 4X4 vehicle with rear tinted windows.
Officers are on high visibility patrols around the area and enquiries are being made to locate the man and the car.
Inspector Andrew Briggs of the Roundhay, Alwoodley and Moortown Neighbourhood Policing Team told Moortown Today: "This appears to be an isolated incident and the girl did the right thing by not speaking to the man and going to find help.
"We are carrying out regular high visibility patrols in the area and are making enquiries to find the man and the car.
"I want to speak to anyone who may have seen the car in the area or who may know someone who fits the mans description."
* Anyone who witnessed this or who has information is asked to contact police on 0845 60 60 606 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
