They climbed on board the "Lab in a Lorry" parked on their school grounds to carry out a range of experiments.

The Lab in a Lorry programme, which is a partnership between the Institute of Physics and The Society of Petroleum Engineers, includes three 44ft lorries that have been visiting schools and other institutions.

Each lorry is fitted with three lab areas where groups of up to six young people can take part in experiments.

"Lab in a Lorry is a fantastic experience for young people," said Institute of Physics spokesman James Bamford.

"They get to have some fun while they explore experimental science under the watchful eyes of expert mentors.

"It's all about generating excitement and curiosity in science."
