Moortown crash victim inquest ruling

A bus driver who lost control and killed a Moortown woman on the last day of her business trip to Copenhagen walked free from a Danish court.

Liaqat Ali's bus ploughed into the central reservation traffic island where Linda Topey was stood waiting to use a pedestrian crossing.

An inquest at Wakefield heard Mrs Topey, 59, of Allerton Grange Rise, Moortown, suffered a fractured skull in the September 2007 tragedy.

The inquest was told Ali probably hit the accelerator instead of the brake while turning right at a busy four-way intersection and struck the traffic island.

The force of the impact flung Mrs Topey into the air and she struck a car before landing on the road.

Ali denied involuntary manslaughter, but was convicted and fined the equivalent of around 500.

Ali told police while turning right he heard a female cyclist shout out and tried to brake. The cyclist was never traced.

West Yorkshire Coroner David Hinchliff recorded an accidental death

verdict.

After the inquest, Mrs Topey's brother Paul Heward, 54, said: "I'm just happy Linda has not been blamed at all for any of this, it was an accident. Whether he had been jailed for five years or got a 500 fine it wouldn't make any difference. Linda is not coming back."
