As the clock ticks towards Christmas, West Yorkshire Nandos restaurants are helping families feather their nests this year.

Around 450 workers at the peri-peri sauce chicken chain’s 10 restaurants in the region have committed their support to the YEP-backed Mission Christmas appeal this year.

Staff have agreed to donate gifts, which would normally be exchanged in a ‘secret Santa’ swap, to the appeal which aims to deliver festive gifts to needy children at risk of waking up to nothing on Christmas Day.

The appeal, run by 96.3 Radio Aire and Magic 828’s Cash for Kids charity, delivered more than 14,000 presents worth over £500,000 to children across Leeds and West Yorkshire in 2012.

Richard Exton, senior regional marketing manager at Nandos, said: “We just think we are quite generous as people and Christmas is definitely a time to be thinking about people a little bit less fortunate than yourself.”

He said a small group of Nandos staff based in Manchester donated to the Mission Christmas appeal last year, which prompted its West Yorkshire outlets to get involved.

All five Leeds Nandos, including the Cardigan Fields restaurant in Kirkstall, will donate gifts along with branches in areas of Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Castleford.

So far around 8,000 Mission Christmas gifts have been requested by charities and organisations to give to youngsters in the region, which means the charity is well on target to deliver more gifts than last year.

Lisa Sullivan, charity manager at Cash for Kids, said: “It’s great to have such a well known national chain involved in the appeal.

“Not only have they supported us here in West Yorkshire but they have also got behind other Cash for Kids appeals.”

She added that the ongoing appeal has already handed over around 470 gifts to good causes that will issue them to needy children in the region on Christmas Day.

Mission Christmas is supported by Crown Point Shopping Park and Foresters this year.

To get involved in the appeal, you can hand in new and unwrapped gifts at collection points in stores at Crown Point Shopping Park and at Radio Aire, until Wednesday December 19.
