A Community rugby club has been challenging its fans, staff and sponsors to scrum down and boost disadvantaged children this Christmas.

Hunslet Hawks RLFC, based in Middleton Grove, Beeston, has been charging towards an impressive gifts haul in its support of the YEP-back Mission Christmas appeal.

The Hawks have deployed their club minibus to collect dozens of gifts and set up a collection point for new and unwrapped presents to be dropped off at its South Leeds Stadium home until December 12.

The appeal, run by 96.3 Radio Aire and Magic 828’s Cash for Kids charity, aims to deliver gifts to needy children at risk of waking up to nothing at Christmas.

Lois Forsell, development officer at Hunslet Hawks, said: “It’s been really good to get involved and it creates a little sense of community cohesion.

“It makes you feel better about what’s being done for underprivileged children and hopefully it will make a few people’s day at Christmas.”

Mascot Harry the Hawk will hand over the club’s donations once they have all been collected.

Lisa Sullivan, from Cash for Kids, said: “It’s heartbreaking thinking there are children out there that aren’t going to get a Christmas present this year, so we’re doing all we can to help.”

So far over 10,500 Mission Christmas gifts have been requested by charities and organisations for youngsters in the region, of which the charity has already donated more than 600.

To get involved in the appeal, supported by Crown Point Shopping Park and Foresters, you can hand in new and unwrapped gifts at collection points across the region until December 19.
