Mirfield racing driver goes pink for charity VIDEO

TOP racing driver Kelly-Jayne Wells is a real pink lady.

For following two brushes with cancer, she has had her racing pick-up truck sprayed hot pink.

The 150mph truck is emblazoned with Cancer Research UK logos as part of the 33-year-old's bid to raise 5,000 for the charity by boosting its profile in the male-dominated sport.

Kelly-Jayne, of Mirfield, is the only female driver of 25 in the UK Pickup Championships.

She said: "I felt I could use my popularity and brilliant following to really bring awareness to a charity I believe in.

"It's amazing the number of people who will see the truck travelling out of the garage and down the motorway.

"That's why it's good to have Cancer Research UK on the spoiler because they will see it from behind when they're driving."

Kelly-Jayne started racing at 11 and has been involved in stock car racing and Formula Ford.

She went into pick-up truck racing in 1997 and broke the lap record at the Rockingham circuit in Northamptonshire. She has finished fourth in the Championship two years running.

She was twice diagnosed with cervical cancer, the first time aged just 23.

The illness was caught very early and she needed relatively minor treatment.

"I was shocked massively but I just dealt with it. I had the treatment and did not think twice about it."

Then when she was 27, the disease returned.

"Luckily I knew my body and I knew something was not right," she said.

She underwent treatment again and has been well since, but her experiences - plus the death of her nan from lung cancer last year, inspired her to help Cancer Research UK.
