Minister Ed Balls listens to voice of youngsters in Leeds

CHILDREN'S Minister Ed Balls was in Leeds yesterday to hear what young people want from the government.

The MP for Normanton, Ossett and Horbury – who was accompanied by justice minister Jack Straw – was at the Lazer centre in Lenhurst Avenue, Armley, Leeds, which has a motorbike maintenance workshop and outdoor track for teenagers.

Mr Balls is today expected to announce a multi-million pound cash boost for young people in Leeds.

It is thought he will grant 4.9m to enable a youth project in south Leeds to expand.

The Hub opened two weeks ago on the former site of Merlyn Rees High at Belle Isle, and already has 60 youngsters signed up.

In total 62m in "fast-track funding" will be announced today that is available through myplace, a scheme that gives young people the power to decide what facilities and activities they get in their area.
