McDonalds loses out to Leeds people power EXCLUSIVE

PROTEST: Residents from Tingley, along with councillors, objecting to the McDonalds scheme.

PROTEST: Residents from Tingley, along with councillors, objecting to the McDonalds scheme.

Campaigners who waged battle against plans for a McDonald’s restaurant are celebrating victory.

Leeds City Council planners have refused permission for the restaurant that the burger chain wanted to build in the car park of the White Bear pub at Tingley roundabout.

Coun Judith Elliott (Morley Borough Independents, Morley South), who backed the campaign, said: “I am absolutely delighted with the decision. It is great news for the many campaigners and the whole area.”

Coun Neil Dawson (Lab, Morley South), who also opposed the planning application, said: “I welcome the decision to refuse McDonald’s’ planning application.

“The organisers of this campaign have done a magnificent job and I applaud their efforts and hard work. I am proud to have helped the campaign and pleased that Tingley residents have got the decision they wanted.

“The council have recognised the impact that a 24-hour, drive-through restaurant would have on local residents and the potential chaos this would bring to an already extremely busy roundabout.

“McDonald’s have six months to appeal against this decision and we need to ensure we are alert to any appeal. I am sure the Stop Tingley McDonald’s team will be well prepared.”

Another campaigner, Victoria Smith, of Oban Close, said: “We are over the moon. It’s such a relief.”

Over 960 people lodged objections to the restaurant plan.

A planning officer’s report setting out the reasons for refusal said that activity associated with the restaurant including traffic and the closing and opening of car doors and noise at unsociable hours was unacceptable.

It also said that there was insufficient off-street parking and a lack of suitable servicing areas.

There was also concern that motorists using the restaurant would add to the peak-time congestion on Tingley roundabout.
