A masterplan aims to get Pontefract’s Monkhill railway station back on track.

Wakefield Council’s cabinet is next week to approve the creation of a blueprint which will see improvements to facilities for passengers, better car parking and could also see bus services work in tandem with the station.

The masterplan, which will be discussed on February 14, has been drawn up by the council in conjunction with transport authority Metro.

It has seen talks take place with local MPs, ward councillors and the Civic Society about what should happen at the station.

The station has the highest number of passengers of the town’s three railway stations and is the only one with services travelling directly from Leeds. But in December, Sunday rail services from the station to London King’s Cross were axed.

A report to the cabinet says: “The station is in an isolated location outside of Pontefract town centre and does not have good access or car parking facilities. The station is understaffed, with no ticket office or station buildings, although a help point is situated on Platform One and the station is covered by CCTV.

“In order to highlight the improvements required for the station in the short, medium and long term, Metro and Wakefield Council officers have prepared a Pontefract Monkhill Railway Station masterplan.”

The plan would look to provide around 47 parking spaces at the station – which currently has eight – cycle parking and a dedicated drop-off and pick-up point. A link road through the nearby Maltings housing development could also provide direct access for buses and a bus and rail interchange could also be created nearby.

If approved the masterplan will also be used to support future funding bids for the redevelopment of the station.

The report adds: “It is not intended that approval of the masterplan would require the commitment of council capital resources at this stage, however it is anticipated that formal adoption of the proposed plan will assist the council and Metro to assemble and secure external capital resources.”
