"In that time she has been a real witness and strength in the church, doing almost every job there is to do. She was a teacher at Talbot School for 30 years and is well known in Roundhay."

Margaret said: "I got married in 1946 and we moved to Leeds from Dalbeattie in Kirkcudbrightshire We looked round for a church and found this one. It was called Roundhay Congregational then.

"And, on 8 October 1948 my husband Johnnie and I became members. Over the years, I've led junior church; been an elder for 21 years; made tea – lots of tea; led the Guides and Brownies; done pastoral care work, and so much more. Now, I'm on the door. I am at home here. We brought our two daughters up in St Andrew's. One of them, Annabel, is here today.

"When my husband passed away, St Andrew's was so kind and surrounded me in love. I'm still busy."

Margaret was presented with flowers by Emma Howes, one of St Andrew's younger members, and Barbara Mary, one of St Andrew's serving elders.

She also received a commemorative certificate from David Pickering and a card on behalf of the elders from church secretary David Robinson.

Rev Pickering added: "Everyone knows somebody Margaret has helped. She greets people at the church door every Sunday. Her love and commitment have helped make St Andrew's what it is and we praise God for her."
