Marathon task in memory of Bramley asbestos campaigner
A friend of the Bramley asbestos campaigner who won a historic victory for victims is to run a sponsored half-marathon to raise funds in her name. Click here for full story.
June Hancock contracted the incurable lung disease mesothelioma through the activities of Armley asbestos factory J W Roberts.
On being diagnosed in 1994 Mrs Hancock launched a claim for compensation against the firm's owners Turner Newall.
After adjournments and delays which dragged the case on for three years the campaign won compensation for hundreds victims.
Following her death in 1997 friends and family involved in her campaign – including journalist Vanessa Bridge and daughter Kimberley Stubbs – established a charitable trust, the June HancockMesothelioma Research Fund, of which they are both trustees.
Ms Bridge will run her first ever half-marathon the Great North Run on Sunday, September 30, to raise money for the fund.
Ms Bridge, who is Director of Information at the University of Leeds and lives in Chapel Allerton, said:
"It's 10 years since June lost her fight against mesothelioma, and in that time the fund has raised 350,000."
Ms Stubbs, of Riccall, said: "My mother won a victory which she said showed that an ordinary person could take on the might of an international corporation and win."
