Man charged with rape of Leeds 89-year-old

A major police inquiry was launched after an 89-year-old Leeds woman was allegedly raped in her own home in the early hours.

The victim was reported to have been attacked and repeatedly raped in the flat in the Mabgate area of the city on Saturday.

Police were alerted shortly after 6am and a local man - a night club door security employee - was arrested later on Saturday evening.

The alleged assault took place at her flat in the Mabgate area.

The West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team were called in and an investigation was launched under the command of Det Supt Steve Payne.

Forensic experts were also called to the address to carry out a detailed examination.

The elderly woman was taken to hospital where she was detained for treatment, before being moved to a residential care home where she was still being looked after yesterday.

A 30-year-old man appeared in Leeds Magistrates Court on Monday charged with raping the pensioner.

Mauro Patrice Lopes, an Angolan who has lived in Britain a few years, was arrested following the assault on the pensioner in the Mabgate are of Leeds city centre on Saturday morning.

Lopes is charged with two counters of rape and one of attempted rape.
