Man who died in police cell in Leeds is named

A man who died at a Leeds police station has been named.

Adam Rice, 46, died whilst in police custody on Monday, May 12.

The IPCC is investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr Rice’s death.

Mr Rice had been arrested by West Yorkshire Police officers at Leeds General Infirmary at around 9.30pm on Sunday, May 11, on an outstanding warrant for theft offences.

He was taken to Elland Road police station and placed in a cell in the custody suite.

Mr Rice was found to be unresponsive when checked in his cell at 7am the next day, and despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was confirmed dead around 45 minutes later.

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Wakefield Coroner’s Court on Thursday, May 22.

IPCC investigators said they are in contact with Mr Rice’s family and will keep them updated as the investigation continues.
