Man of 54 in court over sex attacks

A 54-year-old has appeared in court over two sex attacks.

David Newton is charged with rape, indecent assault, abduction and false imprisonment of a girl of 16 and the kidnap and false imprisonment of her 11-year-old brother in Halton, Leeds in 1997.

He is also charged with the attempted murder and attempted rape of a woman of 52 in 2006.

The teenager was allegedly raped at knifepoint on parkland and her brother forced to lie in bushes nearby.

The woman was walking her dog on Ilkley Moor was allegedly knocked to the ground and punched in the face repeatedly until she lost consciousness. When she came round she was allegedly being strangled and lost consciousness again.

Newton, of Knottingley, appeared for two minutes at Bradford Crown Court, speaking only to give his name, date of birth and to say he had no fixed address. He was remanded in custody to appear at Bradford Crown Court on July 15.
