Lots of stars at auction for village school

IT may be a tiny, sleepy Yorkshire village, but Grewelthorpe is poised for a brush with international sports superstardom at its charity auction.

Home to just one pub, a duck pond and a population of about 400, this North Yorkshire hamlet has managed to bag football boots from the feet of David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

There's also a baseball cap signed by motoring ace Michael Schumacher and a football autographed by Spurs players.

All this and more for the village school's charity auction held next month.

Not bad for a school with 34 pupils!

Other quirky items include a goat-milking exercise, group meditation and baby sitting sessions.

Friends of Grewelthorpe Church of England School (FROGS), near Ripon, have organised the event while parents, governors and villagers have rallied round to come up with the host of prizes.

School administrator Alison Kerr told the YEP: "People have tried really really hard to get a set of great prizes together. There's a football signed by Spurs from one of the parents who's a big fan and a signed baseball hat from Michael Schumacher. Again that was from another parent.

"All this will hopefully get people to come along. We (as a school) get money from the Government, but there is never enough. This will help with trips and running workshops.

"It's quite touching that all the villagers, governors and parents have done a fantastic job in donating these prizes. We hope it will be a really good night."

The auction will be at The Crown Inn on Friday, April 11, at 7.30pm.
