Lord Mayor of Leeds goes pagan

If you've ever had the urge to learn about the magical use of water, hear more about past life regression or take part in healing and reincarnation workshops, then now's your chance.

Pagans from across the north east of England are hoping to dispel many of the misconceptions about their beliefs at their annual conference

taking place in Leeds on Saturday.

"It's not all hocus pocus and dancing naked around the woods at midnight," said David Speight, PR officer for The Pagan Federation North East.

"Paganism is a nature-based faith and is the fastest growing religion in the western world," he said.

The Pagans have persuaded Leeds's Lord Mayor, Coun Jim McKenna and his wife Andrea to drop into the conference and Mr Speight hopes his visit will encourage others to attend.

"We are delighted the Lord Mayor is coming along, and we hope it will help dispel many people's misconceptions about us," he said.

The Lord Mayor – who is keen to point out he is not a pagan and has never been to a pagan event before – will have a quick tour of the day-long event.

Activities for visitors include talks by witch and high priestess of Sheffield Patricia Crowther, and author Philip Heselton, who has published books about witchcraft and paganism.

As a witch and high priestess of Sheffield, Ms Crowther has since the 1960s been a predominant spokesperson for witchcraft. She has written several books as well as made many media and lecture appearances.

Ms Crowther was initiated into the craft by Gerald B. Gardner, being considered his spiritual heir, and has worked promoting the renaissance of the Old Religion in order to benefit and enlighten humankind.

She had formed flourishing covens throughout the United Kingdom.

The conference at Blackburn Hall, Rothwell (10am to 10pm) is the biggest event in the north east pagan's calendar.

Mr Speight added: "It will be a great day, with loads going on during the day and lots of entertainment in the evening. We are not devil-worshippers, come and see what we are all about for yourself."

Tickets for the event are available on the door and anyone wanting more information should visit: www.paganfedne.org
