LOCAL ELECTIONS: Leeds results

AN election of close-fought contests and dramatic recounts ultimately brought little change to the political landscape in Leeds.

Only one seat changed hands with the Liberal Democrats snatching Weetwood from the Conservatives.

Elsewhere Labour came close to making gains in Hyde Park and Woodhouse and Gipton and Harehills – losing in both wards by less than 100 votes – but faced a titanic struggle to defend Ardsley and Robin Hood and Middleton Park from a strong BNP challenge.

Coun Karen Renshaw held on in Ardsley by just 11 votes, while Coun Geoff Driver was returned in Middleton Park by 49 votes.

See all the results below.

The Conservatives came under strong pressure from Labour in Temple Newsam but managed to hang on with Coun Bill Hyde retaining his seat by just over 200 votes.

The political make-up of the council is largely the same as it was at the start of the campaign – Labour has 43 seats, Liberal Democrats 24, Conservatives 22, Morley Borough Independents five, Green three and Independent one.

For the past four years, Leeds – the country's second-biggest local authority – has been run by a Liberal Democrat-Conservative coalition. That is now highly likely to remain the position for the next two years. There are no local elections in the city next year.

Coun Richard Brett, Liberal Democrat group leader, said: "There will be talks between ourselves and the Conservatives next week and I am confident we will continue to work effectively together to govern the city.

"It was an election of very close calls but in the end we were the only party to make a gain. I am delighted to see we took Weetwood and holding on to Harehills feels like a gain."

Coun Les Carter, the Conservative group's deputy leader, said: "It is very much a case of no change. We took a high percentage of the votes but that did not translate into gaining seats.

"I am absolutely certain we shall be able to continue our partnership with the Liberal Democrats,"

Labour group leader Coun Keith Wakefield was pleased that on what was an election drubbing for his party nationally, Labour held on to its 43 Leeds seats.

He said: "I think the Liberal Democrat-Tory coalition should be concerned that on what was clearly a tough night for Labour it did not manage to increase its numbers."

Coun Andrew Carter, Conservative group leader, said in taking the largest share of the Leeds vote – 31.5 per cent, the Conservatives were well placed for success in the city in a General Election.

He added: "Labour's majorities were slashed in wards all over the city and they were lucky not to lose seats."

Voter turnout was approximately 35.76 per cent, as compared to 37.52 per cent in 2007.
