Lights of Love at Headingley Hospice

A mother-of-two who lost her sister-in-law to cancer is supporting this year's Lights of Love Appeal at Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley.

Isobel McLellan lost her battle with the disease in May.

Just two weeks earlier she appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post to support our Half and Half Appeal and the Leeds hospices midnight walk, which raise funds for Wheatfields in Headingley and St Gemma's Hospice in Moortown.

During the Christmas Lights of Love Appeal organised by Wheatfields owners Sue Ryder Care, people can write a tribute to someone they loved on the Lights of Love star sky, in exchange for a donation to the charity. A photograph can be attached if desired.

Isobel's sister-in-law Christine McLellan, who is now looking after her children, said: "Lights of Love is a wonderful event. Our family is thinking about Isobel a lot in the run-up to Christmas and it's nice to have a way of remembering her properly.

"Sue Ryder Care Wheatfields Hospice was there for her when she needed it the most, as well as the rest of the family, so it is nice to give something back.

"I hope as many people as possible will join me in helping the charity help more."

All the dedications will appear in a special Book of Celebration and in a tribute in The Times newspaper, with contributers also receiving a pack containing a special lapel badge and a star, which can be hung on a Christmas tree.

A Lights of Love carol service was held at Wheatfields Hospice on November 2, marking the switch-on of the Christmas tree lights

Another carol service will be held at St Chad's Church on Otley Road, Headingley, on Sunday, December 9 at 3pm.

The 14 Sue Ryder Care charity shops in West Yorkshire are joining the campaign for the first time, enabling people to make a dedication and remember someone special in store.

Barbara Barrett, fundraiser at Sue Ryder Care, said: "Especially in the run-up to the festive season people's thoughts turn to people they have loved, who may no longer be with us.

"Lights of Love is a way of celebrating the time people spent together. Many people support the event because they have been touched by the services Sue Ryder Care provides."
