A Yellow Yorkshire celebration led by the Yorkshire Evening Post has seen residents, schools and businesses raise almost £14,000 for charity.

The YEP’s Wear it Yellow Day fundraiser saw over 50 organisations across the county pledge to spend a day embracing the Tour de France’s famous yellow jersey in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) on Thursday July 3.

A wide range of yellow fundraisers came from the event, with the likes of Leeds Bradford Airport hosting a colourful 3km ‘Tour de Runway’ cycle race.

Around 500 pupils at Dewsbury’s Thornhill Community Academy, of Bafta-winning TV show Educating Yorkshire, also took part as the region geared up for the Grand Depart that saw people turn out in support of Le Tour in their millions.

Tour-tinged Wear it Yellow Day celebrations of the world’s greatest cycle race even went global, with Hewlett Construction turning both its Leeds head office and its office in Oman yellow for the day.

Nicola Furbisher, the YEP’s managing editor, said: “Yorkshire truly embraced the Tour de France as only God’s Own County can, and that enthusiasm was captured during Wear it Yellow Day.

“The figure we have raised continues to grow and is an amazing feat, so thankyou to all who took part and donated. The funds will help what is a vital emergency lifeline for our region.”

YAA fundraisers toured the county to visit organisations taking part in Wear it Yellow Day, which saw every individual getting involved donating £1 each to the charity. The fundraising day was the product of our long-running #yellowyorkshire campaign to give the county a yellow hue ahead of Le Tour.

Across the region dozens of firms got in the spirit of the event.

Primley Park Dentistry donated to YAA for every customer who turned up wearing yellow, PwC in Leeds backed the event and staff at JLL Leeds raised over £1,000 on the day while people tweeted their yellow pictures using the #yellowyorkshire hashtag.

Abby McClymont, marketing manager at the YAA, said: “We are truly overwhelmed at the donations that have arrived with us as a result of the Wear it Yellow Day.

“As is stands, we have received nearly £14,000 – this is 
a remarkable amount of money for us, over a day’s operating costs.”
