Leeds woman's crossing plea in memory of dead boyfriend

THE ex-girlfriend of a student stuntman killed by a hit-and-run driver is urging Leeds City Council to install a traffic crossing in his memory.

Leeds University graduate, Jonathan Hudson, 24, was heading home to Meanwood from a night out when he was hit by a car driven by Mohammed Younis on Clarendon Road in May last year. Mr Hudson had been training to be a stuntman.

His former girlfriend, who he shared a house with, Philippa Ranger, 24, from Holbeck, began the fight last year in his memory, but says she has suffered countless setbacks, despite the support of local councillors.

The campaign, which has run via Facebook and online petition sites, aims to install a pedestrian crossing close to where Mr Hudson was killed, on Clarendon Road and Woodhouse Lane junction, near the University of Leeds and The Library pub.

Council highways officials considered a draft scheme for the junction late last year, including a controlled crossing.

But concerns were raised by residents over the impact this would have on grass verges and trees along the road and the plans were put on hold while consultations were carried out by the council.

Ms Ranger said: "The junction is used by so many people at all hours of the night and day and it's so dangerous."

A council spokesperson said: "Following our initial consultation in December, we have drawn up revised proposals for a pedestrian crossing.

"We will begin consultations on these very shortly. We have been in contact with Ms Ranger to discuss progress."

As reported in Tuesday's YEP, Younis was sentenced to complete 120 hours' unpaid work and a 12-month driving ban after admitting careless driving, dangerous driving, failing to report an accident and failing to stop after an accident.
