Leeds United v Doncaster Rovers: Dual probe into tunnel brawl LATEST
THE Football Association has confirmed it is investigating the ugly scenes which marred the end of Leeds United’s derby encounter with Doncaster Rovers at Elland Road on Saturday.
Both clubs could find themselves in hot water with the football authorities after a major brawl broke out in the tunnel among players following United’s dramatic 3-2 win at the weekend.
More than a dozen officers rushed down the tunnel following the unseemly fracas and West Yorkshire Police are also currently investigating the incident.
An FA spokesperson said: “The FA are investigating the incidents following Saturday’s game.”
The FA will study referee Keith Stroud’s report before deciding whether to charge any players.
Officials are currently liaising with both clubs and gathering observations from the relevant parties involved, but they have not put a timescale on any further decisions.
Players from each squad were told not to speak to the media after the game, and Doncaster manager Dean Saunders did not appear for his post-match press conference.
West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing, with a spokesperson adding: “As it stands, both teams are working with us. Any necessary action will be taken in due course. There are no further details at this stage.”
Police are understood to have spoken to both teams in their dressing rooms following the scenes, which saw officers and stewards rush into the tunnel after being alerted to the commotion.
If both clubs are found guilty the most likely FA punishment is a fine. In October, Chelsea were fined £20,000 after admitting a charge of “failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion” in their Premier League match against QPR.
Meanwhile, USA international winger Robbie Rogers is on the mend after being stretchered off 10 minutes into his United debut as a substitute on Saturday.
A sickening clash of heads between Rogers and Rovers defender Tommy Spurr brought play to a halt, with both players requiring extensive treatment.
Rogers, who was knocked out cold, later tweeted: “Happy to have made my debut! Didn’t know Mike Tyson was out on the field yesterday, out for a good few minutes.
“Concussions are no joke...Laying low for a few days. Thanks for everyone’s concern and comments much appreciated.”
*●Keith Curle – who had been tipped to be part of Neil Warnock’s new-look coaching team at Elland Road – has been handed the managerial reins at League One side Notts County. Curle was assistant manager to Warnock at QPR and Crystal Palace and attended United’s home match with Brighton on February 11.
