The Government has already announced cuts of 1bn nationally, and according to analysis by the university and the Institute of Fiscal Studies, further huge cuts are also likely in the coming years.

It is feared it could lead to the closure of some universities and fewer student places, as well as larger class sizes.

Mike Gladstone, education officer for the Leeds union, said: "This government came to power on a mandate of education.

"They should be following the example of America, France and Germany and investing in our futures, not cutting back. It's time our local MPs and Government ministers realise students will not sit back and take cuts lightly."

Students, staff and members of the public are invited to join the protest.

Last week, members of the University and College Union (UCU) at the university held a city centre rally against proposed cuts.

The university is cutting jobs as part of a review of its Biological Sciences department and has launched a cost-cutting programme to save 35m by 2011, expected to lead to hundreds of job losses.
