Six school in the city were among 282 primaries across the country to succeeded this year in making sure every 11-year-old left their school with a Level 4 in English and maths, down from 351 last year.

Schools achieving 100 per cent results were: Lady Elizabeth Hastings C of E Primary in Ledston; Harewood C of E Primary; Lady Elizabeth Hastings C of E Primary in Thorp Arch; Meanwood C of E Primary; St Joseph's Roman Catholic Primary, Wetherby and Westbrook Lane Primary.

This year's primary school league tables also show several schools showing marked improvements of at least 20 per cent or more for each subject.

The include: Blenheim Primary, Holy Rosary and St Anne's Catholic Primary, Clapgate Primary, Hunslet Carr Primary, Hunslet Moor Primary and Richmond Hill Primary

Chris Edwards, chief executive of Education Leeds, said: "This year's tables show it has been an excellent year for primary education in Leeds. Thanks to dedicated colleagues and families, thousands of children are attending brilliant and improving schools. We will now build on, and learn from, these successes."

Nationally, rising numbers of primary schools are failing to give the majority of their pupils a decent grounding in reading, writing and arithmetic, according to the figures.
