Leeds Santa Dash 2009 invite

As we enter the countdown to Christmas, eight-month-old Isla Chapman is very excited about her first visit from Santa.

But before the big day arrives, the smiling tot will take on 200 other Father Christmas lookalikes at a Santa dash in Leeds.

Isla will be joined by her dad Jamie at the two-day St Gemma's Hospice event, which includes races on December 12 and 13.

The youngster will do battle in her pushchair at the 5k Hyde Park Santa Dash, which starts at 9am on the Saturday.

And the oldest participant, 70-year-old Jack Rushby, will complete the one-mile city centre Santa Dash on the Sunday.

All Santas taking part in the races will be in full costume – meaning Leeds will see a sprinkling of festive spirit a few weeks early.

Isla's mum Gail, who works as a fundraiser at the hospice in Moortown, Leeds, said: "We just thought it would be a bit of fun.

"It's Isla's first fundraising event for St Gemma's but I think she'll enjoy herself and she'll like watching all the other Santas."

Mr Rushby, of Halton Moor, is a regular St Gemma's fundraiser and is now in training for his third hospice Santa Dash.

He said: "St Gemma's Hospice did a very good job looking after my parents and I've been involved in fundraising for around five years.

"There's a brilliant atmosphere at the Santa Dash because you're all doing something for the same purpose.

"The looks on the kids' faces when we run past is a picture. They probably wish we'd come to their house and bring lots of presents."

The 5k timed race in Hyde Park, organised in conjunction with the University of Leeds and Park Run, was first held last year.

The run attracted 100 participants – but the event was so popular organisers have now increased the number to 200.

The one-mile 'fun run' through Leeds city centre is now in its fourth year and will start at 10am at Central Square, outside WH Smith.

Both events are supported by Little Tokyo, Real Radio and Up and Running and aim to raise thousands for St Gemma's Hospice.

Organiser Laura Robinson said: "These fabulous, festive fun runs are suitable for all ages and abilities.

"We are looking for people aged eight months and 70, as well as anything in between, to take part and help raise money."

The Santa suits will be provided by St Gemma's.
