Leeds primary pupils develop passion for Gaelic football
A group of primary school youngsters in Leeds have developed a passion for a new sport – after Gaelic football was added to their curriculum.
Year 5 pupils at Richmond House School in Headingley have been learning to play the Gaelic way as part of a six-week course added to their PE lessons.
The lessons are taught by a coach from the Leeds branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association, which runs sessions in several primary and secondary schools in Leeds.
Richmond House aim to take part in a Gaelic Football Festival later this year.
PE and games co-ordinator Simon Lowe said: “Gaelic football is similar to Aussie rules – unlike football, you can run with the ball, drop-kick it and pass it. It’s brilliant because they can use skills they’ve learnt in rugby and football.”
