Leeds lifeboat fundraisers rescued - by lifeboat

Three people from Leeds were rescued by lifeboat after getting trapped by the incoming tide at the base of one of the tallest cliffs in England.

The man and two women became stranded on a rocky outcrop below the 300ft sea cliffs at Saltburn, near Redcar.

They were stuck on the boulders for 20 minutes before being picked up by two RNLI lifeboats from Redcar.

The friends, all thought to be in their 30s, were not hurt during the drama, which unfolded at 2.15pm on Sunday.

They were rescued with about an hour to spare before the advancing waters washed over the rocks.

Dave Cocks, from Redcar lifeboat station, said: "The tides are high at the moment and they come in quickly. If there was a bad time of the year to be cut off, this was it."

The visitors from Leeds were on a walk on the Cleveland Way footpath.

They are believed to have been part of a larger group staying in Staithes for a weekend of fundraising activities on behalf of the seaside village's lifeboat station.
